The protein encoded by this gene is a high-affinity copper transporter found in the cell membrane. The encoded protein functions as a homotrimer to effect the uptake of dietary copper. Diseases associated with SLC31A1 include Wilson Disease and Ethylmalonic Encephalopathy. Among its related pathways are Metal ion SLC transporters and Transport of glucose and other sugars, bile salts and organic acids, metal ions and amine compounds.
