In addition to regulating thyroid-specific expression of genes, thyroid transcription factor (TITF1; MIM 600635) controls the transcription of genes specifically expressed in lung, such as surfactant proteins (e.g., SFTPA1; MIM 178630) and uteroglobin (UGB; MIM 192020). Mice lacking Ttf1 die immediately after birth from respiratory failure caused by profoundly hypoplastic lungs (Kimura et al., 1996 [PubMed 8557195]). Strongly inhibits phospholipase A2 (PLA2G1B) activity (PubMed:24213919).
Seems to have anti-inflammatory effects in respiratory epithelium (By similarity).
Also has anti-fibrotic activity in lung (PubMed:24213919).
