Introduction
The disease cholera, caused by toxigenic strains of Vibrio cholerae belonging to the O1 or O139 serogroup, is characterized by the passing of voluminous watery stools, which rapidly leads to dehydration and, if left untreated, to death. V. cholerae O1 is further classified into two biotypes, classical and El Tor, and into two major serotypes, Inaba and Ogawa.
