Obesity Research
Obesity is a complex disease manifesting with too much body fat and increasing the risk of many other diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, liver disease, sleep apnea, and some cancers. Often, obesity is caused by genetic, physiological, and environmental factors, as well as diet, physical activity, and exercise choices. A body with a body mass index (BMI) of more than 25 is considered overweight, and one with more than 30 is considered obese. The problems of overweight and obesity have become epidemics, with more than 4 million people dying as a result of overweight or obesity in 2017. The rates of overweight and obesity continue to rise in both adults and children. From 1975 to 2016, the global prevalence of overweight or obesity among children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 19 more than quadrupled, from 4% to 18%.
