The wrapper gene was identified in a reverse genetic screen for secreted and transmembrane proteins expressed in the Drosophila CNS. The GPI-anchored immunoglobulin (Ig) domain protein Wrapper is expressed on the surface of midline glia and loss of the protein leads to defects in the wrapping of commissural axons and impairs viability.
