What is the function and cellular localization of ALDH9A1?

ALDH9A1 (also known as E3 isozyme or TMABADH) is an enzyme with broad substrate specificity, notably involved in the biosynthesis of carnitine (converting trimethylaminobutyraldehyde) and the metabolism of GABA (converting aminobutyraldehyde). It is localized strictly to the cytosol (cytoplasm). In IF and IHC experiments, you should observe a diffuse cytoplasmic staining pattern.

Does this antibody cross-react with other ALDH family members?

The ALDH superfamily shares sequence homology, but this product (Clone F6) is a mouse monoclonal antibody raised against a specific recombinant fragment of human ALDH9A1. It is designed to be specific for ALDH9A1 and does not show significant cross-reactivity with other common aldehyde dehydrogenases like ALDH1A1 or ALDH2 in standard applications.

Function

Converts gamma-trimethylaminobutyraldehyde into gamma-butyrobetaine with high efficiency (in vitro). Can catalyze the irreversible oxidation of a broad range of aldehydes to the corresponding acids in an NAD-dependent reaction, but with low efficiency.
