Neisseria meningitidis is a frequent inhabitant of the upper respiratory tract of humans and is a major cause of meningitis and fulminant septicemia in otherwise healthy individuals. Among the important virulence factors involved in meningococcal pathogenesis, endotoxin, or lipooligosaccharide (LOS), is a major component inducing proinflammatory responses in meningococcal sepsis and meningitis. Lipooligosaccharide (LOS) of Neisseria meningitidis has been implicated in meningococcal interaction with host epithelial cells and is a major factor contributing to the human proinflammatory response to meningococci.
