Chikungunya E2

The Chikungunya virus, also known as the mosquitotransmitted alphavirus that causes global epidemics1, has been declared a serious disease by the CDC1. CHIKV is an enveloped virus with an 11.8-kb single-stranded, positive-sense RNA genome with two open reading frames3,4. The amino acid identity of the three main genotypes is 95.2 to 99.8%: Asian, West African, and East Central South African. A nucleocapsid protein C and two glycoproteines, E1 and E2, 5 are present in the mature CHIKV infection. E1's involved in the fusion of viruses. E2 is used for attachment to cells. E1 and E2 form 80 trimeric spikes on the virus surface 6.
