Introduction
Apelin is a neuropeptide expressed in the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei that acts on specific receptors located on vasopressinergic neurons. The gene encodes a 77-amino acid polypeptide that includes a secretory signal sequence. Synthetic 36-amino acid apelin (apelin-36), corresponding to the most C-terminal 36 residues of preproapelin, caused the acidification of cells expressing transfected APJ, but not other receptors. The peptide fragments activate different tissue specific signaling pathways that regulate diverse biological functions including fluid homeostasis, cardiovascular function and insulin secretion. This protein also functions as a coreceptor for the human immunodeficiency virus 1.
