Full Name
HEN Methyltransferase 1
Introduction
HENMT1 (HEN Methyltransferase 1) is a Protein Coding gene. Among its related pathways are Mitotic Prophase and Gene Expression. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include RNA binding and RNA methyltransferase activity.

Alternative Names
HEN Methyltransferase 1; HEN1 Methyltransferase Homolog 1; C1orf59; HEN1 Methyltransferase Homolog 1 (Arabidopsis); Hua Enhancer 1 Homolog 1 (Arabidopsis); Chromosome 1 Open Reading Frame 59
Function
Methyltransferase that adds a 2'-O-methyl group at the 3'-end of piRNAs, a class of 24 to 30 nucleotide RNAs that are generated by a Dicer-independent mechanism and are primarily derived from transposons and other repeated sequence elements. This probably protects the 3'-end of piRNAs from uridylation activity and subsequent degradation. Stabilization of piRNAs is essential for gametogenesis.
Biological Process

Production of siRNA involved in RNA interference Source: GO_Central
RNA methylation Source: FlyBase
Cellular Location
Cytoplasm. Component of the meiotic nuage, also named P granule, a germ-cell-specific organelle required to repress transposon activity during meiosis.
