Introduction

MESP1 (mesoderm posterior 1 homolog) is a protein that has transcription factor activity, sequence-specific DNA binding and protein dimerization activity. Diseases associated with MESP1 include tricuspid atresia and heart septal defect. Among its related pathways are cardiac progenitor differentiation. An important paralog of this gene is MESP2.

Function

Transcription factor. Plays a role in the epithelialization of somitic mesoderm and in the development of cardiac mesoderm. Defines the rostrocaudal patterning of the somites by participating in distinct Notch pathways (By similarity).
