Introduction
This gene encodes the protein forms homodimers with a member of the retinoid X receptor (RXR) family of nuclear receptors which are involved in mediating the effects of retinoic acid (RA). The protein also forms homodimers with thyroid hormone, and vitamin D receptors, increasing both DNA binding and transcriptional function on their respective response elements. Retinoic acid receptors bind as heterodimers to their target response elements in response to their ligands, all-trans or 9-cis-retinoic acid, and regulate gene expression in many biological processes.
