L Cysteine
Cysteine is a semi-essential proteinogenic amino acid with the formula HO2CCH(NH2)CH2SH. The cysteine sulfhydryl group is nucleophilic and easily oxidized. When the thiol is ionized the reactivity is enhanced, and cysteine residues in proteins have pKa values close to neutrality, so are often in their reactive thiolate form in the cell. As a result of its high reactivity, the sulfhydryl group of cysteine has a lot of biological functions, and cysteine may have played an important role in the development of primitive life on Earth.
