Target

Full Name
Acyl-CoA Thioesterase 13
Introduction
ACOT13 is a member of the thioesterase superfamily. In humans, ACOT13 co-localizes with microtubules and is essential for sustained cell proliferation. The orthologous mouse protein forms a homotetramer and is associated with mitochondria. The mouse protein plays a role as a medium- and long-chain acyl-CoA thioesterase.

Alternative Names
Acyl-CoA Thioesterase 13; Thioesterase Superfamily Member 2; THEM2; Acyl-Coenzyme A Thioesterase 13; Hypothalamus Protein HT012; EC 3.1.2.-; PNAS-27; HT012
Function
Catalyzes the hydrolysis of acyl-CoAs to the free fatty acid and coenzyme A (CoASH), providing the potential to regulate intracellular levels of acyl-CoAs, free fatty acids and CoASH. Has acyl-CoA thioesterase activity towards medium (C12) and long-chain (C18) fatty acyl-CoA substrates (By similarity). Can also hydrolyze 3-hydroxyphenylacetyl-CoA and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetyl-CoA (in vitro) (By similarity). May play a role in controlling adaptive thermogenesis (By similarity).
Biological Process
Acyl-CoA metabolic process
Negative regulation of cold-induced thermogenesis
Protein homotetramerization
Cellular Location
Nucleus; Mitochondrion; Spindle; Cytosol. During interphase, found both in the nucleus and in the cytoplasm. At mitosis, localizes to the spindle. Colocalizes with tubulin.
