aryl hydrocarbon receptor interacting protein
Introduction
The AHR-interacting protein (AIP) was originally cloned and designated XAP2 by Kuzhandaivelu et al. (1996) who used a yeast 2-hybrid system to identify proteins that interact with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) X protein. By use of a yeast 2-hybrid assay to detect proteins that interact with AHR in a ligand-dependent manner, Carver and Bradfield demonstrated interaction of AIP with AHR. This protein can regulate the expression of many xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes. Also, the encoded protein can bind specifically to and inhibit the activity of hepatitis B virus. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. Using Northern blot analysis, Kuzhandaivelu et al. detected a 1.25-kb AIP transcript in all 16 adult tissues tested with the exception of the liver.

Function
May play a positive role in AHR-mediated (aromatic hydrocarbon receptor) signaling, possibly by influencing its receptivity for ligand and/or its nuclear targeting.

Involvement in disease
Pituitary adenoma 1, multiple types (PITA1): A form of pituitary adenoma, a neoplasm of the pituitary gland and one of the most common neuroendocrine tumors. Pituitary adenomas are clinically classified as functional and non-functional tumors, and manifest with a variety of features, including local invasion of surrounding structures and excessive hormone secretion. Functional pituitary adenomas are further classified by the type of hormone they secrete: growth hormone (GH)-secreting, prolactin (PRL)-secreting, adrenocorticotropin (ACTH)-secreting, thyroid- stimulating hormone (TSH)-secreting, and plurihormonal (GH and TSH) tumors. Familial and sporadic forms have been reported.
Prolactin-secreting pituitary adenoma (PSPA): Most common type of hormonally active pituitary adenoma.
