Introduction
This gene encodes a cell adhesion protein which is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. This protein is a cell adhesion molecule involved in neuron-neuron adhesion, neurite fasciculation, outgrowth of neurites, etc.(Microbial infection) Acts as a receptor for rabies virus. The encoded protein is involved in cell-to-cell interactions as well as cell-matrix interactions during development and differentiation. Because of evidence indicating close homology of neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) in man and mouse, a murine cDNA probe for NCAM could be used directly for in situ hybridization to human metaphase chromosomes (Nguyen et al., 1985). This procedure indicated that the NCAM gene is located at 11q22-q23. The encoded protein has been shown to be involved in development of the nervous system, and for cells involved in the expansion of T cells and dendritic cells which play an important role in immune surveillance. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
