Introduction

BTB domain and CNC homolog 1 (BACH1) is a transcription factor that belongs to the cap'n'collar type of basic region leucine zipper factor family (CNC-bZip). BACH1 contains broad complex, tramtrack, bric-a-brac/poxvirus and zinc finger (BTB/POZ) domains, which is atypical of CNC-bZip family members. It functions as a repressor of Maf recognition element (MARE) and transcription is repressed when forming a heterodimer with MafK.

Function

Transcriptional regulator that acts as repressor or activator, depending on the context. Binds to NF-E2 DNA binding sites. Plays important roles in coordinating transcription activation and repression by MAFK (By similarity).
Together with MAF, represses the transcription of genes under the control of the NFE2L2 oxidative stress pathway (PubMed:24035498).
