Introduction
ALDH1L1 encodes 10-formyltetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase (FTHFD; EC 1.5.1.6), a cytosolic enzyme that catalyzes the NADP(+)-dependent oxidation of 10-formyltetrahydrofolate to tetrahydrofolate and CO2 and the NADP(+)-independent hydrolytic cleavage of 10-formyltetrahydrofolate to tetrahydrofolate and formic acid. The enzyme also oxidizes some aldehydes Loss of function or expression of this gene is associated with decreased apoptosis, increased cell motility, and cancer progression. There is an antisense transcript that overlaps on the opposite strand with this gene locus. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
