Target

Full Name
tight junction protein 2 (zona occludens 2)
Introduction
TJP2 is a zonula occluden that is a member of the membrane-associated guanylate kinase homolog family. TJP2 plays a role as a component of the tight junction barrier in epithelial and endothelial cells and is necessary for proper assembly of tight junctions. Mutations in TJP2 have been identified in patients with hypercholanemia, and genomic duplication of a 270 kb region including this gene causes autosomal dominant deafness-51.

Alternative Names
Tight Junction Protein 2; Friedreich Ataxia Region Gene X104 (Tight Junction Protein ZO-2); Zonula Occludens Protein 2; Zona Occludens 2; X104; ZO2; Deafness, Autosomal Dominant 51
Function
Plays a role in tight junctions and adherens junctions.

Involvement in disease
Hypercholanemia, familial, 1 (FHCA1):
A disorder characterized by elevated serum bile acid concentrations, itching, and fat malabsorption.
Cholestasis, progressive familial intrahepatic, 4 (PFIC4):
A disorder characterized by early onset of cholestasis that progresses to hepatic fibrosis, cirrhosis, and end-stage liver disease before adulthood. PFIC4 inheritance is autosomal recessive.
