Gurken (Grk) is a TGFα family signaling ligand that activates the intracellular MAP kinase pathway via the Egfr. The asymmetrical localization of grk mRNA is key for its function during oogenesis, to establish anterior-posterior and dorso-ventral axes in the egg and embryo. The protein is critical for defining the anterior-posterior and dorsal-ventral axes of the egg.
