Full Name
SOLUTE CARRIER FAMILY 16 MEMBER 11
Introduction
Genetic variants in SLC16A11 were recently reported to be associated with type 2 diabetes in Mexican and other Latin American populations.

Function
Proton-linked monocarboxylate transporter. It catalyzes the transport of pyruvate across the plasma membrane (PubMed:28666119).
Probably involved in hepatic lipid metabolism: overexpression results in an increase of triacylglycerol(TAG) levels, small increases in intracellular diacylglycerols and decreases in lysophosphatidylcholine, cholesterol ester and sphingomyelin lipids (PubMed:24390345).

Involvement in disease
Diabetes mellitus, non-insulin-dependent (NIDDM):
A multifactorial disorder of glucose homeostasis caused by a lack of sensitivity to the body's own insulin. Affected individuals usually have an obese body habitus and manifestations of a metabolic syndrome characterized by diabetes, insulin resistance, hypertension and hypertriglyceridemia. The disease results in long-term complications that affect the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and blood vessels.
