Appendix
The appendix is a narrow pouch of tissue connected to the inferior end of the large intestine’s cecum in the digestive tract. It normally gets four inches in length and is located in the right iliac region of the abdomen. The appendix tissue is composed of an inner submucosa, muscularis and serosa layers on the structure. The submucosa of the appendix has many masses of lymphoid tissue, which indicate that appendix may also serve as part of the immune system. The exact function of appendix in adult hasn’t be proved clearly. Some medical researchers hold the opinion that appendix is not a vital organ while others think it acts as a storage area for beneficial bacteria during times of illness. It may be removed directly in clinical treatments when it gets inflamed or even in certain abdominal surgeries. Appendicitis is a fairly common and dangerous disease of the appendix. A variety of target molecules could be used in diagnosis and detection of appendix tissue.
